“The Place of Images in an Analysis”

ICLO-NLS Clinical & Theoretical Seminar 2016/17

THE PLACE OF IMAGES IN AN ANALYSIS with Véronique Voruz

“Our civilisation appears to be one in which images prevail and organise subjective realities. By contrast, an analysis insists on the primacy of the signifier. Indeed, there are no images that are not also associated with a word: a trait, an affect, a mode of enjoyment.Yet, there remain some images that are not reducible to the symbolic register in an analysis. What are their function? How do we deal with them? We are in the register of the fantasy, defined by Jacques-Alain Miller as a phrase-image.”

Véronique Voruz is a psychoanalyst member of the École de la Cause freudienne (ECF), New Lacanian School (NLS) and of the World Association of Psychoanalysis (WAP), and currently Analyst of the School (AE, 2016-2019). She is Managing Editor of The Lacanian Review: Hurly-Burly and Course Director of the MA in Psychoanalysis at Kingston University, London.
