The Contemporary Subject and the Choice of Mode of Jouissance

The general axis for this Seminars for 2014/16 will be -in line with the forthcoming WAP Congress in Rio- “Language and the Body”. In the last decades we bear witness to a kind of democratisation of modes of jouissance that goes beyond the simple opening of the choice of one’s gender. A plurality of modes of jouissance, tending to infinity is put on the stage of civilisation, without many restrictions. This broadening of the scope of modes of jouissance is often puzzling and prolongs the time to “choose” one’s jouissance. We encounter young people who take time to find the signifier under which to register their jouissance. Will they be homosexual? Heterosexual? Will they choose another identification and another object of jouissance? Will they decide not to choose, which is of course also a kind of decision? Recent research concluded that in Japan, many youths choose not to have sex at all. Yet, this does not mean that they choose not to have a mode of jouissance. These new phenomena are the consequence of the fall of the father which has left us compassless regarding jouissance. In this seminar, I would like to read these phenomena using some examples from everyday life, culture, and clinical cases. (Gil Caroz)
