THE SLIP OF SEX. SOME REMARKS ON THE SO-CALLED GENDER IDENTITY DISORDER
“While gender studies strive to construct theories about identity (“Am I a woman captive in a man’s body?”,”Am I a man born in the wrong body?”), Lacan is going to sustain the impossibility for psychoanalysis to found a new ontology, because the jouissance of the body, in the way it affects the speaking being, does not really constitute a being, does not establish any kind of essence, hence the fact that it is only “for brevity” that Lacan allows himself to use the terms “man” and “woman”. What in psychoanalysis is called “sexuality” -which, as we shall see, is not confined to a question of identities- is a kind of anomaly that language inoculates in the organism and in which all the phenomena that we circumscribe under the concepts of libido, jouissance and the drive are originated.”
Gustavo Dessal is a psychoanalyst in Madrid. He is an Analyst Member (AME) of the Lacanian School of Psychoanalysis (ELP) and of the World Association of Psychoanalysis (WAP). He teaches at the Institute of the Freudian Field. He is also a fiction writer. In 2014 he published “The Return of the Pendulum”, co-authored with Zygmunt Bauman.
